Dom Phillips: Third suspect arrested over killing of British journalist in the Amazon, as autopsy confirms cause of death | World News

A third suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a British journalist in the Amazon.

Dom Phillips, alongside indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, went missing two weeks ago – but human remains have now been found.

Forensic tests have confirmed that Mr Phillips has been killed, and other remains discovered are believed to belong to Mr Pereira.

A man called Jefferson da Silva Lima has turned himself into a local police station.

Two brothers are also being held over their alleged involvement in the killings.

Earlier this week, officers said the main suspect – fisherman Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira – had led them to the burial site.

He also told officers that he used a firearm to commit the crime.

According to the police, Mr Phillips was shot in the chest, while Mr Pereira was shot in the head and abdomen.

An autopsy suggests that a “firearm with typical hunting ammunition was used”.

The pair were last seen on their boat on the Itaquai River – near the entrance of the Javari Valley Indigenous Territory, which borders Peru and Colombia.

That area has seen violent conflicts between fishermen, poachers and government agents.

In a statement, Mr Phillips’ wife Alessandra Sampaio said his family can now “say goodbye with love”.

She added: “We also begin our quest for justice. I hope that the investigations exhaust all possibilities and bring definitive answers on all relevant details as soon as possible.”
