A dad accused of killing an alleged paedophile for raping his eight-year-old daughter should not face murder charges, locals have said.
Rocket engine factory worker Vyacheslav M, 34, was drinking with his longtime friend Oleg Sviridov, 32, near their home in Vintai village in Russia’s Samara region, when he found videos of the alleged attacks on his mobile phone.
Sviridov was the godfather to the little girl, now nine, and had looked after her on his own multiple times.
After being confronted by Vyacheslav over the videos, Sviridov fled.
After reporting the rapes to police Vyacheslav launched his own search, found Sviridov, and allegedly stabbed him to death.
Police say the distraught father confessed to killing Sviridov but said he “stumbled on the knife during a quarrel” in a forest near the village.
The body of the alleged paedophile was found near the village on Thursday, more than a week after Vyacheslav had seen the abusive video.
Vyacheslav has been detained and the case is under investigation.
Police said there were multiple videos on Sviridov’s phone of him abusing other girls, aged six and 11.
Criminal cases have also been opened into the sexual abuse of the children found on Sviridov’s phone.
Sviridov’s mother said that her son had often been a babysitter for Vyacheslav’s children, and the pair had been longtime friends.
She said: “I don’t know how it got to this. He must have been drunk. Most likely he was drunk.
“They left their children with him all the time. When he was baby-sat these girls he came back home as normal, in a good mood.”
But villagers and those across Russia have demanded Vyacheslav does not face murder charges.
“He is not a murderer – he protected his daughter and our children too,” said one local.
“Everyone is on his side.”
Prominent TV journalist and former Russian presidential candidate Ksenia Sobchak told her followers: “All parents are standing up for the paedophile’s killer.”
